Is this a typical and boring way to start writing? also critique it?

There's a good rule of thumb in writing called beginning "in media res". What that means is, when you write a story, begin in the middle of the action. All that opening stuff is boring and useless, I'm afraid to say. What you need to do is stop, figure out the moment where the action in your story really starts, and begin it there. And good luck!
